Balzan Preis an Lothar Ledderose

Milan, September 6, 2005 – The International Balzan Foundation has awarded the 2005 prizes for The Social and Cultural History of Cities since the Beginning of the 16th Century to Peter Hall, UK, University College London, for The History of the Art of Asia to Lothar Ledderose, Germany, Kunsthistorisches Institut, Heidelberg, for Population Biology to Peter and Rosemary Grant, UK/USA, Princeton University, for Mineral Physics to Russell Hemley and Ho-kwang Mao. Each prize is for one million Swiss francs (about 650,000 euros). Half of each award must be allocated by the winner for the funding of research projects carried out by young scholars or scientists.

In 2006, awards will be made in the following areas: History of Western Music since 1600; Political Thought, History and Theory; Observational Astronomy and Astrophysics, Plant Molecular Genetics.

Unlike other international forms of recognition, these subjects are chosen annually by the Balzan Foundation. Two Prizes are awarded in the humanities (literature, the moral sciences and the arts) and two in the sciences (medicine and the physical, mathematical and natural sciences). By rotating subjects, a special characteristic of the Balzan Prizes, it is possible to give preference to new or emerging lines of research, and to sustain important fields of study that may have been overlooked by other great forms of international recognition.

This year, the Balzan Prizes will be awarded in Berne, during the Ceremony that will be held on Friday 11 November at the Swiss Federal Parliament Buildings. The winners of the Balzan Prizes were chosen by the General Prize Committee, a body chaired by Ambassador Sergio Romano and composed of 20 members from the most prestigious cultural institutions in Europe. The Committee chooses from among candidates proposed by universities, academies and other cultural institutions throughout the world at the Foundation’s request.

The Chairman of the “Prize” Foundation is Ambassador Bruno Bottai.
