大公報 (Ta Kung Pao)
Language: Chinese (Big5, GB).
Description: Established in Tianjin in 1902, the Dagongbao is the oldest Chinese newspaper still in existence. After 蔣介石 Chiang Kaishek started to control the 國民黨 Kuomintang in 1927, the Dagongbao established close ties with the new leadership. In the following years the paper was also known under the name "l'impartial" and was widely read both by intellectuals and the bourgeoisie. During the war against Japan and the following struggle between the KMT and the CCP, the Dagongbao was published from various places, among others Shanghai, Chongqing, and Hankou. In Hong Kong it started publication in 1938, and after a few years of interruption during the Japanese occupation, reappeared there in 1948. Meanwhile, in 1949 a mainland version of the Dagongbao also reincarnated in Shanghai, later moved to Tianjin, and eventually closed in Beijing in 1966. The Hong Kong version is still running today and enjoys a broad readership even abroad.

Description: Ming Pao Daily News, founded in 1959 by the well known author 查良鏞 Zha Liangyong (better known by his pen name 金庸 Jin Yong), is on-line since September 1995. The paper is positioning itself as a leading 'intellectual paper'. It is not linked to any political party and is also distributed in Macao, USA, Canada and Europe. Once very critical towards Mainland China the paper has softened its voice since a change of ownership of the paper in 1995. For a critical evaluation of the political standing of Ming Pao in 1997 see Joseph Kahn's article "A Hong Kong Newspaper Softens Its Voice: Like Many Others in Colony, Ming Pao Hews Closer to Beijing's Line" (in: The Asian Wall Street Journal (April 22, 1997); reproduced here from the Committe to Protect Journalists news archive).

Together they share well above 70% of the total newspaper market, both claiming to have the bigger readership. Apple Daily was publicly criticised from the Hong Kong Journalists Association (HKJA) for its sensational reporting and outrageous, attention-grabbing pictures (cf. their 1998 annual report). At the same time the paper is also known for its unyielding attitude towards the PRC authorities: it was labeled as "unfriendly organisation" by the Beijing government and faces restrictions in news coverage from China (cf. the HKJA 1999 annual report).

Since the paper was bought in 1993 by Robert Kuok - who's friendship with mainland leaders has been an issue ever since -, the SCMP has lost some of its reputation as leading independent paper of the region. Currently directed by his son, Kuok Khoon Ean, it still is one of the major English language news resources in East Asia.

The electronic edition is on the net since August 1995. The European edition is available at http://www.singtaoeu.com/. "As with other medium-sized mainstream newspapers, the Sing Tao Daily has been facing growing difficulties over the past two years, particularly as its market share has been eroded by the two mass-market dailies, the Oriental Daily News and Apple Daily. According to a February SRG Media Index Report, the Sing Tao Daily's average daily readership had almost halved from 218,000 at the end of 1996 to 120,000 in February 1998. The current economic crisis has also taken its toll." (Hong Kong Journalists Association and ARTICLE 19 [eds.]: "Questionable Beginnings. Useful
世界日報全文檢索系統 (The World Daily fulltext search system) (Shih Hsin University, Taipei, Taiwan)
Language: Chinese (Big5).
Description: "A daily founded in Beiping in 1925 by Cheng Shewo 成舎我 (1898-1991). The first issue appeared on February 10. It consisted of eight pages (one big sheet) in the beginning, and was later expanded to three sheets or 24 pages. The Shijie ribao was addressed to the political and educational circles; it was famous for its editorials, which were mostly authored by Cheng Shewo; it had special columns for economics, education and women's issues; and it included a pictorial, which later was issued separately. Other supplements followed. Lu Xun belonged to the frequent contributors to the paper. Circulation is said to have reached 40 to 50,000. After Cheng Shewo had been taken into custody by the warlord Zhang Zongchang 張宗昌 due to his critique of warlord politics, his comments became more cautious. Publication stopped in August 1937, when the Japanese occupied Beiping. It reappeared on November 20, 1945, taking an anti-Communist stance. Publication stopped on February 25, 1949. Between May 1945 and July 1949, a Chongqing edition was published" (Source: Gan Xifen: Xinwenxue da cidian, Zhengzhou, 1993. Translation kindly provided by Dr. Andrea Janku).
The digitization of Shijie ribao is an ongoing project, currently (March 2005) the news articles between 1926 and 1929 and scanned images of the first five issues of May 1926 are available. The search (direct access at http://icd.shu.edu.tw/lipo/search2/index.php) provides three fulltext fields that can be combined with AND, OR or NOT, and two date search fields. Results are displayed in a single list, hits in the title are marked in red (not within the article itself). Unfortunately, the image-files are named using Big5 characters and are thus not easily accessible on western machines.
Site contents: (1) Main; (2) About Shijie ribao; (3) News fulltext search; (4) Contact us.
