INTRODUCTION TO NÜGUANG ZHOUKAN
The Nüguang zhoukan (which could be
translated as "Women’s Splendor
Weekly") claims to be the only
interesting reading material in the
woman's world. Its is published by the
Nüguang publishing house
which is situated in Shanghai
One exemplar costs two silver ounces
Nüguang zhoukan names three maxims
主義
and four aims
The three maximes are not to talk about
not to talk about the failings of others
and not to talk about dirty and rude
.
The four aims are to combat evil ideas
to lead the right way 指導趨向之正軌,
to enhance one's personal luck
and to uphold women’s honour
The first issue of Nüguang zhoukan
appeared on the 1st of January 1930.
Unfortunately the available source lasts
only half a year until the 29th of June
1930. It is unknown to us when the magazine
actually ceased publication. With respect
to the appearance of the journal, it
is interesting to observe that it changed
its header twice during the short period
of half a year: first with the 13th
and a second time with the 26th issue.
The organization of the magazine was
made up of men only: these
were Chen Yihe 陳一鶴
(chief editor), Huang
Yitai
(main issues),
Lu Yuehui
(relationship), Chen Zhipeng 陳志鵬
(art),
Shen Zhicun
(advertisment), Xue Qingxiang 薛慶祥
(printing),
Lu Zhenhuan
(distribution), and
Zhou Wenhui
(accounting).
Among the authors, however, there appear
to have been both men and women, although
one cannot be sure that some of the
female writers who sign their articles
with 'nüshi'
女士
adhering their name (not all
women do so) are in truth women.
