Interesting
Academic Info: Asian Studies - Directory of Online Resources> (Mike Madin, Academic Info, [USA?])
Language: English.
Self description: "Mission: Improve access to online educational resources by developing an easy to use subject directory covering each academic discipline. Increase educational opportunities for students in rural and underrepresented communities by giving them the same online experience as students from more privileged communities. [...] The primary focus of the site must be academic, with its intended audience at the upper high school level or above. A priority is adding digital collections from libraries, museums, and academic organizations and sites offering unique online content. Will add annotated subject directories but not sites with only a 'list of links.' [...]"
Description: This is a subsite of academicinfo.net, a directory of educational online resources maintained by Mike Madin. After ten years at the University of Washington's Gallagher Law Library Madin left in 2000 to work full time on Academic Info. Many links are briefly annotated, mostly using the site's self description. Sorting is alphabetically (page-title), which does not make it too comfortable to use. The search (as the table of contents) can be accessed from the mainpage only, but boolean operators can be used. The site displays sponsored links.
Site contents: Afghanistan Studies, China Studies (General Links, Reference Desk, Digital Library, Libraries & Print Archives, Chinese Language Study, Chinese History, Religions in China, Chinese Law & Government, Chinese Cinema, Organizations), India Studies, Japan Studies, North Korea, Tibet, Buddhist Studies (Digital Library, Links & General Resources, Zen Buddhism, Buddhist Art, Women & Buddhism, Buddhism in America, Sanskrit Studies, Centers & Organizations, Reference Desk), Hinduism, Islam, Sikhism, Asian American Studies, SARS, See Also

中国搜索 = Zhongsou.com (China Search Online, [China?])

Introduction to Uyghur Culture and History (Nathan Light, University of Toledo, OH, USA)
Language: English.
Self description: "On the web it is difficult to get accurate information about Uyghur history and culture. This page is an online introduction to Uyghur history and culture, and to my research on the politics of Uyghur musical history. Many of the sources I have linked here are biased presentations, either assuming with the Chinese that what they call the Xinjiang (meaning "New Territory") Uygur Autonomous Region was always a part of China, or presenting the Uyghur nationalist view that there should be a separate Uyghur state. This makes these interesting materials to read, but highly rhetorical. The Xinjiang region is neither purely Uyghur, nor historically a part of China. [...] I have created this page in order to help non-Uyghurs to go beyond limited ideas about Uyghur culture and history based in popularized archeology and romanticized travel accounts, towards a deeper recognition of the Uyghurs' rich cultural traditions that endure despite present political difficulties and economic changes."
Site contents: (1) Basic Information Sources (Maps; Satellite Images; Online Databases; Uyghur Language; Unicode Google Searches); (2) News Sources; (3) Uyghur Culture (Music, Films, Art, Literature); (4) Activist and Nationalist Sites and Analysis; (5) Politics of history, especially lingering racist mythologies; (6) Travel and Photographs; (7) Bibliographies on Uyghur History, Literature and Culture; (8) Photos of Uyghur Life, Art and Material Culture.
Resource suggested by Jan Rosseel, Leiden University, Leiden, The Netherlands.
