The Daqing oil field in Northwest China was
discovered and opened in the early 1960s.
Daqing became a symbol of economic, personal,
and national self-reliance throughout the decade
of the Cultural Revolution, as exemplified in
such phrases as The Spirit of
Daqing. Daqing remains the chief oil
producing region in China. This landscape-style
is exemplary of the resurgence of traditional
guohua painting in the early and mid 1970s,
especially in Jiangsu. The poster also
illustrates the wide use of models in Chinese
political art. Such models were consciously
presented as distillations of the ideas of the
masses and illustrated national values, as well
as specific solutions to national problems. Song
Wenzhi (b. 1919) was a very well-known guohua
painter, based in Nanjing.
