Mao’s Rural Investigations in the Jinggang Mountains

A picture of Mao as a young revolutionary leader visiting a household of armed peasant supporters of the Communists in the late 1920s, in the Hunan-Jiangxi border area. Mao’s experience in the region led him to rethink his ideas about the role of the peasantry in the revolution and to reject Comintern dogma. His informal seated pose is a popular one used in many portrayals of Mao and other leaders. This pose shows the leaders having “heart-to-heart” talks with ordinary people, listening to their views before giving them back reformulated into plans of action--“from the masses, to the masses.
