Chairman Mao Inspects the Guangdong Countryside
Mao Zhuxi shicha Guangdong nongcun
Chen Yanning
1972, Beijing
Mao is at the center of a crowd of peasants
striding down a track between irrigation
channels, with fields beyond. The
peasants bare feet indicate that they have
been working in the rice paddies. Mao is
flanked by the senior men, while the women are
relegated to the periphery. The hat indicates
that the scene was set in 1958, the first year
of the Great Leap Forward and the founding of
the commune system, which lasted until the early
1980s. From an oil painting by Chen Yanning
(b. 1945), one of the most highly skilled
artists of his generation, who studied at the
Guangzhou Academy of Arts.
