Medical and rescue teams join PLA soldiers marching to the aid of the Tangshan disaster area. On July 18, 1976, Tangshan, in Hubei Province, was the epicenter of one of the most severe earthquakes in China’s recorded history. Shock waves were so intense that major damage occurred in Beijing, 100 miles distant. The tragedy resulted in more than 240,000 officially reported deaths. This poster celebrates the radical spirit of self-reliance with which China declined all foreign and UN offers of aid. Instead, a national relief campaign was organized, with PLA soldiers, medical, and rescue teams arriving from all over China.
