The Commune Fishpond
Gongshe yutang
Dong Zhengyi
1974, Beijing
Painted in the highly decorative Huxian
style. Huxian was a commune in Shaanxi province
which became renowned for the paintings by its
peasant inhabitants. The paintings commonly
depicted everyday scenes of rural life. It was
later admitted that the peasants received
extensive help from professional artists in
composing and painting their pictures, but these
scenes remain among the most attractive of the
images produced at this time. Despite
exaggerations such as the fantastic yield shown
in this poster, such paintings often contain
realistic details.
